Personality:
Marco is that snarky, loudmouthed whiner who never misses an opportunity to make fun of or complain about everything, including himself. He blows off homework to play video games and play dumb pranks on people. He comes across as immature and annoying, and flirts with every cute girl within line of sight. When he's in a bad mood, he makes stupid jokes; when he's in a good mood, he makes stupid jokes. When he's in trouble, he runs his mouth until he can get away. Marco has no tact and no shame; he proudly describes himself as "cute, charming, witty, and modest". Irony drives his sense of being. Others tend to find him insufferably grating, but usually can't help but find him amusing somehow.

His outward presentation is mostly a coping mechanism for dealing with the extreme fear, grief, and stupid bullshit he experiences on a regular basis; all this became exaggerated as the Animorphs entered the war against the Yeerks, and he's always quick to point out that they have to laugh at themselves, or else run away screaming in horror. He's intensely paranoid and cautious, and greatly values self-preservation; a fear of dying or losing himself is one of his strongest motivations. Sometimes it makes him look like a coward, and he freely admits to his reservations in risking his life. He is the most reluctant to plunge forward, preferring to have all options considered and sorted out into neat little piles rather than rely on whims.

Beyond the class clown persona, he has a brilliantly fast and analytic mind, with a natural ability to see the most direct path from his current status to a desired goal. He can keep a straight face through some of the toughest situations, and compartmentalizes away his emotions when under stress. Often, his strategies seem cold and ethically dubious, since the straightest line between two points frequently involves ruthless sacrifices. With some prodding from the other Animorphs, he'll grudgingly consider the feelings of other people involved, but not without reminding them about all possible complications they now have to consider.

At first, his hesitation to fight came from his fear of abandoning his father, who was suffering a breakdown after his mother died in a mysterious boating accident. (Somewhat related to his mother's death, Marco cannot swim, and has a much harder time with water-based morphs than the others.) Marco is fiercely protective of his home life, refusing to let anything upset his father’s emotional recovery. For him, keeping the remainder of his family intact was so important that the burden of overseeing his home life kept him from committing fully to the Animorphs. His loyalty to his family is such a blind spot that when his father remarries, Marco is so distraught that his morphs come out as twisted hybrids.

His hesitations became obliterated when he found out that, rather than dying, his mother was actually taken as a host by one of their main enemies. His renewed motivation to continue fighting was banked on the hope that he would eventually rescue his mother and reunite his family. Near the end of the war, he's presented with the opportunity to both keep his father out of the clutches of the Yeerks and rescue his mother; this forced him to make a choice between losing his family and revealing the Animorphs’ secret. He decided on the latter, despite being captain of the paranoia boat, and caused a sudden escalation of the war. Marco and his father were forced to fake their own deaths and become refugees with his mother; this, somehow, made Marco deliriously happy.

After the war ends, Marco is perhaps the most comfortable of the Animorphs. He succeeded in his main goal of reuniting his parents, and becomes rich and famous off his inability to stop talking about himself. The rest of the world was willing to give him lots of money to hear him tell ridiculous stories about how he turned into animals in order to save the planet, and he doesn't skip a beat to take advantage of the limelight. The world of butlers, fast cars, and hot girls keeps him happy, but also bores him to tears; he barely hesitates when called upon to leave everything behind and go off on a ridiculous, suicidal mission to reunite with the Animorphs and save an old friend. At his core, he really does care about people being happy and safe, and cheers for the triumph of good over evil.
